Armed Forces Weekend
Worthing will once again be hosting Armed Forces weekend for West Sussex this year, on 26th and 27th June.
The Combined Ex-services Association (CESA) is planning a full weekend to honour our armed forces and veterans on Steyne Gardens from 10 o’clock each day.
Armed Forces Day nationally is on the last Saturday of June, described by the government as ‘celebrating armed forces past, present and future’. Our event will include cadets, serving men and local veterans.
With a large stage and brilliant sound system there will be entertainments, stalls, food and drink and displays all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The stage will be mainly for school-children and youth groups on Saturday, with concerts in the evening and Sunday afternoon. On Sunday morning the drumhead service will see mayors and other civic leaders from all over Sussex in all their glory, a flurry of standards and seating for hundreds of people.
A BBMF Spitfire will fly over early Saturday evening, and the coastguard helicopter will join the Shoreham lifeboat offshore to do a rescue demonstration at a time to be announced.
One young Sea Cadet said ‘I am looking forward to it. I had a wonderful time last year with everything that was happening, especially the helicopter and the army vehicles’. Janet Goldsbrough-Jones, the event organizer, is looking forward to again seeing 1000s of people enjoying the event. ‘I am so proud of all that our armed forces do, have done, and will do in the future. Every right and freedom we have they gave us; and how better to remember that than getting together and having a good time’.
Anyone wanting to help would be welcomed. Bob Scott, CESA’s president told us ‘events like this do take a lot of work, and I know Janet would love to hear from you. Every little bit helps, at the event or before’. Eric Mardell is looking after the money side for CESA ‘we are looking for sponsorship from local businesses who would like to help in exchange for publicity’.
Worthing is proud to have a few large weekend events during the summer months, and this is one to really enjoy, rather different from the others.
